SUGGESTED ANSWERS for Summary Exercise 1

Watch television nowadays and you will discover a wasteland. The shows are no longer entertaining or interesting. They are silly and violent. The advertisements are unbelievable or boring. Television programmes should teach and uplift. They should deepen knowledge. They should entertain yet fulfilling. Good programmes are few and far between, hidden by meaningless ones. Television authorities think educational or thoughtful programmes are not entertaining. However, they are being irresponsible. They have a responsibility to the viewers not just to entertain but to teach. They should offer a wide variety and range of programmes to cater to all tastes. They must give people what they want as well as what they need.

Dear Mei Ling,
Hope this letter finds you, Uncle and Aunt, in the best of health. We are all doing well here. I have joined A levels and am busy attending classes and coping with a new phase of life- college life. Don't worry, l managed to look up the Internet and consult some friends regarding community work and how to go about it.
Community or social work is something that anyone, young or old, can do to help people in need. We do not have to wait for government and non-government organisations to initiate the process. Instead, we can start our own community service and your society will be an ideal platform from which to launch it.
One excellent way is to begon a food bank. When calamities such as floods, earthquakes and typhoons are taking their toll on people in our country and in other parts of the world, it is a good idea to collect foodstuff and other non-perishable goods to help these victims. Your society members can organise a house-to-house collection in your residential area. In school, you can have a class-to-class collection, or set up one outside the school canteen during break. Naturally, you would have to obtain permission from your school authorities. The foodstuff collected can be sent to international organizations like Mercy to forward to places needing food. You can also distribute it to orphanages and homes in your town.
If you are an animal lover with a big heart, you can volunteer to help at an animal shelter. You can do anything from walking dogs to cleaning kitty cages and lending a hand around the office. Helping to save an animal's life or just making its life better for a couple of hours, is a great feeling that you will always remember. Besides, you might just meet your new best friend and take home a pet you like.
Another way of doing social service is to visit a nursing home. This can bring joy and comfort to the inmates. For this, you have to be patient and good with people. Often, just spending time with some of the residents will do a world of good to both parties. You can read to them, play games or help the authorities to organise house events. Brightening the days of some elderly folks can brighten up your day too. All te warm compliments you will get from the lonely residents will give you a total ego boost.
Next, you can start your own recycling drive by collecting aluminium cans, newspapers and used batteries and send them to recycling centres. If there is no recycling programme at your school, you can set up recycling bins, spread the message and take the goods put in the bins to a recycling centre. Or you can spend a couple of afternoons going door to door collecting things that can be recycled. For this, you should check with your community or residential area on what can be recycled and where you can drop things off. This is a great project as you will get to meet many people in your community.
Similarly, you can help to build or repair homes and clean up compounds if you are the type who love being outdoors and don't mind a little physical labour. By doing this, you will be working closely with interesting people and getting good exercise at the same time. Of course, the feeling of accomplishment when the project is completed id out of this world.
Lastly, you can help out at the local museum or library. This is recommended if you love your town, or there is a museum or library in your area. You can do anything from helping set up exhibits to office hour or crowd control. As a thank you, you will probably get free passes or other perks. Moreover, it is fun to go 'behind the scenes' at a local spot and see how things operate.
There are many more ways to help in the community but i guess these will do for the moment. Kindly convey my love and regards to your parents. Perhaps, when you visit us next, we can plan a trip to an orphanage to get some ideas on what you can do.

                                                                                                                   Yours Sincerely,
                                                                                                                       Yin Yin

Dear Sir,
Unsatisfactory Condition of the School Field

I would like to make a complaint about the condition of the school field. I am a Form Four student and I find the condition of the school field most unsatisfactory.

2 Last Friday, my brother who is in Form One, came home with grazed knees. According to him, he had a fall in the field during the Physical Education lesson. The field is full of small stones. This is the cause of his knees being grazed. Apparently many of his classmates suffer the same fate whenever they fall during a game. This is why many of his classmates make excuses not to play games any more. The teacher understands the circumstances and does not force them to play actively in the field.

3 The school field is soggy and full of water after rain. It is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

4 I find such conditions very disturbing. Moreover, the standard of the school games has dropped. The safety and health of the students are at risk. Obviously  the school field is a danger zone.

5 It has been my hope that you will look into this matter seriously before more serious accidents occur. I would be grateful if you could take prompt action on the matters raised above. Let's make our school field an enjoyable place to be.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully.

(AQIF MIKAIL)
